On Friday, April 26th country music legend George Jones passed away. George’s life certainly was a lived one – his songs often mirroring the ups and downs, twists and turns, loves and heartaches of his real life.
I came across a song of his called “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be” and it struck me in relationship to both George’s passing and to all his loved ones still living, including his wife Nancy Sepulvado of thirty years. I got to thinking about what makes a life a well-lived one.
It seems a well lived life is one that is our own and yet shared with many. One that teaches us the lessons we’re here to learn with a balance of challenges and celebrations along the way. A well lived life sheds a bit of light onto our place in this vast universe. We start to remember who we really are.
And when we remember, we get a taste of heaven on earth. It’s in those moments when we’re present to life in all its beauty and pain, its birthing and dying, to witness it all as the great dance of creation like a verse in this old George song says:
In heaven no drooping nor pining,
No wishing for elsewhere to be;
God’s light is forever, there shining,
How beautiful heaven must be.
May heaven find its way into your day…
In honor of George and all our loved ones that have passed,
Song: How Beautiful Heaven Must Be

Performer: George Jones
