Eric Church, Jason Aldean, and Jessta James…a few of the boys that are infusing country music with a style that’s all their own. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jessta James recently after a friend introduced me to his single “Back in the Day.”

Cowboy Q&A with Jessta James
Q: Tell us about the road to your music career. How did it begin and how did you know that it was the dream you had to chase?
A: I’ve always been a huge fan of music, but it wasn’t until I wrote my first song in ’05 that I realized that this was my calling. I wrote over 150 songs while honing my craft before taking it to LA to start recording professionally. It was there that I dove head first into industry while finding my own unique sound. Soon after, I started working with a producer in Atlanta. We wrote my album ‘Time To Get Right’ and took it to Nashville to record it at Blackbird Studio.
Q: I love the original style of your songs. How would you describe your sound?
A: Thanks! I call it country/rock infused with hip hop. I was raised on the old outlaw country music (like Waylon, Hank Jr. and Johnny Cash), then I got into classic rock in my teenage years. It wasn’t until after high school that I really got into hip hop… so when I was developing my sound, I realized the real me was all three of those things. It came naturally.
Q: One thing that strikes me about who you are and what you’re doing is the heart you bring to your songs. There are a few values/principles that seem to play a major part in your life and career. Tell us about them.
A: Thank you, it means a lot to me that you take notice of that. The two most important things to me are my faith and my family. God has blessed me with this incredible opportunity to share my heart with people through music…that is something I don’t take for granted. My family has always been my greatest support system, and has helped me become the man I am today. My beautiful wife Chandra is my rock and our baby boy Wyatt is my biggest inspiration. Making music is more than a career to me… I want my songs to make a difference in the lives of everyone who hears them. Whether it’s by simply making their day better or by truly inspiring my fans to turn their life around… I’ve found that talking about the things that matter most to me is what really strikes a chord with my listeners. They relate to it.
Q: I think it’s this sense of originality and heart that makes your music so much fun to listen to. What advice do you have for others about being authentic and going after their dreams?
A: I’d say first off, people want music that’s genuine over anything! If the music you put out is genuine, people will connect to it… even if they are nothing like you. Then you should ask yourself “What separates me from everyone else out there?”… and develop those qualities. Expect challenges and embrace them… they will only make you stronger and better. And when it comes to going after your dreams… I’ve learned that if you put God first, He will give you the desires of your heart.
